CatBirdBaby Mei Tai

Mei Tai

Super versatile, gorgeously made Mei Tais - carry your baby the traditional Asian way, updated to suit modern day, stylish, busy parents.
Mei Tais are deceptively simple, but they are an awesome way to babywear. They are compact (being just cloth) & easy to keep in your baby bag. At the same time, the adjustability allows you to cinch it tighter where you need and spread the straps where it's most comfy for you, unlike with stiffer SSCs.
Come try out a Mei Tai and you may be surprised that you don't necessarily need all those buckles and clips!

CatBirdBaby

The Catbird Baby mei tai is based on traditional Chinese baby carriers. You can use our mei tai with newborns and toddlers alike in four carrying positions. The fit is highly customizable through tying methods.
Carrying styles:
  • front facing in
  • on your hip
  • on your back
  • with a sleeping hood when your little one's head gets floppy
Our mei tai has many innovative features that babies and parents love! The base fabric is a supersoft 100% brushed cotton that is sturdy but snuggly. The print panel features stylish and popular cotton quilting designs from makers such as Alexander Henry, Michael Miller, Free Spirit, and Amy Butler. And our completely unique elastic adjustment loop enables you to decrease the width of the carrier as much or as little as you wish to get a perfect fit for your baby's legs each time.

Carrying Instructions

A) Front Carry

1
Tie the mei tai around your waist, square (double) knot in back. The mei tai should be positioned like an apron, with the front side touching your stomach, the carrier hanging down like an apron, before you bring it up to tie.
2
Pick up your baby and hold her against you with her legs straddling your middle, centered above the mei tai carrier.
3
Bring the body of the carrier up between your child's legs and up across her back. Take one shoulder strap over your shoulder, then the other strap over the other shoulder.
4
Cross the straps in an X on your back. Pull straight down at first before bringing the strap around to the front; this helps keep the X centered on the back more.
5
Bring the straps around to the front to tie. In the picture, the straps are under the child's legs; you can also tie the straps over the tops of the baby's thighs. If length allows, you can cross or twist the straps, take them under the baby's legs and tie behind you.

B) Back Carry (using a couch to put your baby on your back)

1
When you are first learning how to back carry your baby, you may wish to practice using a couch to assist you. To start, lay out the mei tai flat on the couch, with enough room for you to sit in front of it.
2
Sit your baby down on top of the carrier, with her legs straddling the carrier body and each leg going above the waist strap on either side.
3
Sit down in front of your baby and scoot back towards her, till she is straddling your back. Pull the carrier up against your back so the front side of the mei tai body is against your lower back. Your back plus the mei tai will form a U-shape; your baby is sitting inside the U-shape.
4
Pull the shoulder straps up over your shoulders as you begin to stand.
5
Bring the shoulder straps over your shoulders, then take them back behind you, cross or twist over baby's legs in the center of the carrier, bringing the straps beneath baby's legs and to the front to tie in a square knot.

C ) Back Carry (using hip scoot method for 6 months and up)

1
Tie the mei tai around your waist, square (double) knot in back. The mei tai should be positioned like an apron, with the front side touching your stomach, the carrier hanging down like an apron, before you bring it up to tie.
2
Pick up your baby and place her on your hip off to one side.
3
Start scooting baby further and further towards your back. As you do, lift your arm on that side up and over her head and keep scooting her towards your back, while you also lean forward.
4
Keeping one hand on your baby, use the other hand to pull the body of the mei tai up over baby's back Take the shoulder straps up over your shoulder.
5
Take the shoulder straps down in front of you and take above or beneath baby's legs, then cross behind you and bring back to the front.
6
Tie the shoulder straps in front in a double knot securely.
